INFORMATION and OPTIONS FOR THE SHOOT:
CLOTHING: Please try to stay away from small stripes, checkers or busy plaid.  Anything else is fine. Bring one outfit you feel especially comfortable in (i.e that certain Audition outfit / uniform you often wear), at least one pair of jeans and a couple of T-shirts/ tops (any color).   Bright colors always look great, but it depends on what you are going for.  White and Black are fine but tend to look drab and even can look one dimensional (However, if you are going for a classic/ old-fashioned or a very specific look these colors work well).  My advice is to take advantage of using color and how it can make your picture/ eyes pop off the page (Even if you don't normally wear bright colors, I think you'll be impressed with the results).

COST & (ALL THE COOL STUFF YOU GET) DIGITAL:  Your cost depends on the package you select. SEE RATES PAGE .
After the shoot, I will upload all your pictures to a photo gallery in order for you to view.
After you select your final cut (you should email me the list of your finals)- I will retouch those photos, and then burn a CD for you to keep. In addition, I will email you a private link where you and your agent/manager can view your final shots.

( I will send the CD to you in the mail, or you can come by and pick it up.) You can print them whenever you want.  The CD is yours to keep.

What is the difference between a commercial and a theatrical headshot?
In the acting industry there are two primary divisions. The commercial and the theatrical. Often an actor will have both a commercial agent and an acting agent. And an actor will have two different types of headshots printed at all times. The commercial and the theatrical. Under the commercial side of this business you have an agent that focuses only on getting you in the door for commercials. The goal is a national commercial because that has a big pay check, but it can be a local spot sometimes as well. Some commercial agents will also rep you for commercial print work and voice over talent. In this side of the industry they need a certain sales ability on your appearance. Warm, friendly, trusting and vanilla is the primary image that is wanted for the commercial shot. Even though you see thugs, dramatic images of children and so forth in a lot of the commercials on the air today, the image that the commercial casting agent is expecting is smiley and light. Primarily that is what sells as far as getting yourself commercial work regardless of the character and concept of the commercial itself.

Because of this you will want neutral colors, soft colors and possibly bright colors for your commercial shot. I am not talking about the background. I am talking about your clothing and your make-up. Your photographer will help in regards to background choices in the studio on location. When doing the actual shoot no matter what you are wearing or what your background looks like, you will want to aim for a few commercial and a few theatrical.
Now, as a side note I should mention comedians here as well. Comedians have a little flexibility on their shots. But, mostly they take the concepts of commercial and exaggerate them. Meaning, the smiles are fuller, the eyes are wider and they are a bit more zany. Or, they have an act geared around a specific character or mood and get their shots based of that character. Emo Philips is more likely to have an odd possibly pouty look on his face with a bizarre outfit on. Janeane Garofalo on the other hand is likely to have a look that communicates a bit of annoyance or sinister look, especially towards the beginning of her career or after 'Reality Bites'. But Jeff Foxworthy would have had a somewhat normal really happy headshot, maybe with a beer in his hand, but you get the idea.

Now let's talk about the theatrical headshot. A theatrical agent is submitting you for plays, TV and film work. There is a certain amount of professionalism that is looked for here because it's not just a shoot that will last a couple of days to sell a car or apple juice. These guys need someone who is smart, able and hopefully responsible! Trust me when I say that people are looking for responsible despite the dramas and recklessness of some talented actors and actresses in this business. Once you are known you can be as unprofessional as you want. But I might add you would be shooting yourself in the foot a bit. To hire Courtney Love for 'The People vs. Larry Flint,' the production company had to place a 10 million dollar insurance policy on her because of her known addiction to drugs. But, before you are well known, no one wants to hire a liability. That is why theatrical shots have stayed in that more serious tone. It actually comes from the glamour shots of Hollywood. But to be in an evening gown for a headshot will communicate that you do beauty pageants. To be in a tux you would be classified as a model, not an actor. So, you mellow down the clothing to fit for what you specifically need for your shots. With the competition in Hollywood, you need a theatrical shot that really pops. It says I am here, I am damn good and I will nail this role with no drama and not be a liability. When you have that, you will get work in spades. That is a lot to say in a photograph. But, as a performer there is a certain amount of confidence and certainty that is expected. Showing that certainty in your headshots, without arrogance, will get you to the top.

Why is a $50 deposit required for a reservation?
Let’s say a client has a shoot this Sunday at the pier. Well, basically, I reserve my day for you. I load up the equipment, gas up the SUV, pick up my assistant and or make-up artist (if applicable) and head to Santa Monica ready to shoot. THEN I get a call from the client saying, “I don’t really feel well today”, “my car broke down,” “My nose was bitten by a dog last night.” Meanwhile, my assistants and I are standing there, out of work and extremely upset. I have heard every excuse in the book to cancel a shoot. (those listed above were actual excuses). Let’s face it, we are all professionals and expect the client to keep their word. Your deposit insures me and my team that you are a serious client. . . and just in case you don’t show up, at least our gas is covered.
The deposit is non-refundable and the $50 is subtracted from the total balance of your package. However, if you reschedule your shoot prior to 72 hours beforehand, you will not lose your deposit.
You can pay your Deposit Online with any major credit card, or paypal (SEE RATES PAGE) or by mailing a check. (call for address)

What is the “usual” Amount to pay for headshots, in general?
A professional head shot can range from anywhere from $250-$1500 (depending on the number of looks, hair, make-up artists, etc.) Since I do not shoot full time and have lower overhead, it enables me to reasonably reduce my rates more so than most other professional photographer’s in LA. But to answer the question, a good headshot (for at least one one look) should not cost more than $400.
Please, no matter what you decide, do yourself a favor and don’t waste time by getting headshots taken by a “friend” with little or no experience, who claims they will shoot you for significantly less. (If I had a nickel for every person that has come to me for a re-shoot of their “friend’s” work . . . ) If you are a serious actor, you will invest in strong, solid headshots done by a seasoned professional. Trust me, agents, managers, and especially casting director’s know the difference.

What do I do after I get my Final headshots on CD?
I suggest you get your reproductions (you should probably get at least 300 of your commercial look and 300 of your theatrical look) from ISGOPHOTO . They have an awesome online kiosk where you can order everything online (even do your own name set-up and style if you wish). It is easy, there are no additional fees, reasonable prices and very quick turn around. There is an ISGO’s located in Hollywood, North Hollywood, Downtown and Santa Monica.
I have known some photographers/ actors who prefer Reproductions, which is located in Universal City, but you cannot order online and are known better for their black and white printing.

WHERE:   I prefer to shoot outdoors or by large windows using only natural light for headshots. Modeling/ Fashion shots are a whole different ball game. Sometimes, I like to use a combination of the two, it really depends on your skin tone and coloring. However, I do have strobes and additional lighting equipment on hand at my studio. I usually use the studio (on my private roof top or loft), or a few different locations. I can also come to your home for “lifestyle” type shots- this is mainly for families and celebrities, Please call for details for special location jobs.
We will discuss your location prior to your shoot. If you select my studio, I will give you my address and directions in an email after I receive your reservation deposit and speak with you on the phone.

AT THE SANTA MONICA PIER:  Sometimes this location is nice for a shoot at because the sea and air have a beautiful calming effect on you.  It feels less like a shoot (or work), and can be very relaxing and fun. The Santa Monica Pier is Located at the intersection of COLORADO AND OCEAN in Santa Monica, CA.
